A PUSHY NEIGHBOR AND A GHOST AT THAT, PORTLAND, MAINE |
| The ghost of a pushy neighbor haunts this house, built by merchant Hugh McLellan in 1800. Captain Asa Clapp bought the house in 1817 but never lived in it. Another sea captain, Joshua Wingate, bought the house in 1825. Wingate's daughter married Charles Clapp, son of Asa, and the newlywed Clapps built the house next door. Now Asa Clapp is said to haunt both houses-one he never lived in, and one where he was never more than a guest. In 1880, Mr. and Mrs. Lorenzo Sweat bought the old mansion, which later became the original building of the Portland Art Museum. Hauck,p.203. |
