~The Keeper~ ----------A Halloween Story-------- Part II *Blue*

~The Keeper~ -----A Halloween Story----- Part II

Johnny and I had already completed 1/3 of the work inside the mansion, our attempts to restore the old place to its original beauty had seemed to pay off, yet there was still so much work to do and much to be done on the outside of the old mansion. We replaced the broken weathervane that had been on top of the mansion’s tower room, then sewing some Fall flowers at the entrance of the property, setting up our mailbox trimmed in black and gold lettering spelling out Masden added somewhat of a little flair at least it was a start, looking a little better now that someone lived here.

I had so much on my mind driving down the lane passed where the old grist mill, had been located in Hillcrest on that late Friday evening. I almost didn’t notice the little girl standing a little too close looking over the edge down into the icy water below. I stopped, getting out of my car and casually walked over to a bench located just to the side of the bridge. I spoke offering a friendly hello, but never approached her and at first I thought that she hadn’t heard me walk up much less drive up.

She looked to be around 10 or 11 years old with pale blonde hair and at that moment though I couldn‘t see her facial features, her skin looked almost as fair as the color of her hair. I glanced around at my surroundings and realized that this was the same bridge the townsfolk had mentioned to Johnny and me. The same covered bridge that dated back to 1860. There was another bridge located on the drive to Galt City, it had been built sometime in 1867. The memory of this day stands out because I remember on this particular day, It had seemed ominously quiet that Fall evening or was it just me, I had been thinking at the time---

I wondered if all the stories the local townspeople had been telling me since Johnny and I arrived at Hillcrest and Monroe Mansion had made such a profound impression, that every little thing, put my emotions in high gear, causing my imagination to work overtime. It had started out what seemed an ordinary morning, made breakfast for Johnny and me, washed what few dishes we’d used and then got dressed, worked around the place for a few hours and getting in to my 55’ Chevrolet that afternoon, intending on buying a few things at the town’s only supermarket.

That is until I reached Hillcrest., and its only covered bridge. According to the town’s legend, the bridge was the infamous bridge where Silas Alden Monroe met with Robert Montgomery just before dawn. They’re feud had been on-going since before the Civil War. Tate Donovan seemed to know a great deal about the feud, he had informed Johnny and me, the feud had been over a young woman by the name of Rachel O’Malley. Her family had settled in the area sometime between 1860 and 1864. Silas Monroe had built the Monroe mansion with Rachel in mind and even though both men had loved her, she didn’t marry either one, instead she had disappeared according to Tate Donovan’s narrative of the ill-fated love triangle.

That evening when I returned, I started up the steps, when I turned around, intending to return to my car, Tate Donovan was directly behind me. Giving me a start. That man was as quiet as a mouse. “Can I help you with any thing Miss Josie”. He had asked me. I shook my head and started to go back in the house instead when I thought about the little girl at the bridge. I walked down the well-worn path in the direction of the flower gardens while asking Tate Donovan who the little girl’s parents might be, he’d said he didn’t know, no one he knew had fit her description.

Now, I was truly puzzled as I stood in the entryway to the garden wondering how strange it had seemed, as I recalled the little girl had never turned around the entire time I had sat on the bench at the bridge talking to her and then when I had went to my car to bring her some multi-colored jellybeans, she had already left. None of this was making much sense that is not until that night when I heard a knock upon the back door.
