~The Keeper~ A Halloween Story--------Part III *Blue*

~The Keeper~ A Halloween Story Part III

Johnny came home that same night getting some rest for a few hours and would be leaving back out soon. I had mentioned to him while eating dinner about seeing the little girl at the covered bridge and Tate Donovan’s peculiar behavior. He’d laughed it off telling me that I took some things too serious. The little girl was probably afraid she was going to get in to trouble and went home.

While he agreed, certainly playing around the bridge like that could be dangerous especially a young child he had said. Johnny tried to reassure me and I did try to see it all from his perspective. I reasoned every thing had an explanation but still something kept telling me there was more to this story., there was more going on here that we were missing somehow and I intended to get to the bottom of it.

When sometime around midnight there was beating, clanging coming from the yard, when we went down the stairs, it could be heard more clearly, the loud noises had been coming from the back kitchen door. Opening the door, there she was, the little girl who had been at the covered bridge that afternoon. I had said to Johnny, it’s the little girl I saw earlier that day. For the first time, I saw her face, it was so very pale and tear-stained. She had been crying, Johnny and I brought her in the kitchen, I took a wet washcloth washing her face, her hands and knees. Her legs were also covered with cuts and scrapes, her dress was filthy, what could have happened.

My question was soon answered as she frantically described the car accident to Johnny and me. We learned her name was Amelia; her parents were Andrew and Rebecca McDuffy, they just lived down the road a few miles the little girl had said. She wanted Johnny and me to take her back to her parents car at the same covered bridge where I had seen her earlier that same day.

Johnny went to start the car while I grabbed a flashlight and slipped on my windbreaker, holding her hand after helping her into our car.. She looked up at me with a sad little smile upon her face, I tried to give her a reassuring smile in return, telling her we would help her mama and daddy, every thing would be alright.

When we arrived at the scene of the accident Amelia had described. I had expected to see ambulances, a fire truck, but there was nothing, no one was there not even a trace where someone may have went off the bridge into the water below. I looked at Johnny, when he exclaimed that there must be some explanation for this.

Paul Winslowe; our nearest neighbor drove up asking if we were alright. Johnny explained to him about the little girl coming to our house, telling us about she and her parents wrecking here at the bridge. I looked around and couldn’t see Amelia any where. “She’s gone Johnny, where did she go?” I had asked that cold dark night. The expression on Paul Winslowe’s face was one of sympathetic understanding. “Sometimes , though not too often any more, this happens.” Mr. Winslowe explained. “What happens?” Johnny asked first.

“Every now and then a passer by will stop here at the bridge and Amelia will appear seemingly out of nowhere, I guess she did tonight?” Mr. Winslowe asked. No I had said, telling Paul Winslowe that earlier I had seen the little girl, and she had suddenly disappeared. The man seemed puzzled. “That’s strange, she has been coming here late at night like now, not in daylight.” He exclaimed. “Why is that?” Johnny wanted to know a look of incredulity showing plainly on his face.

Paul looked at Johnny and from him back to me. “Well, we all figure the accident that happened here, happened late at night . They had hit a patch of ice sliding over the bridge down into the ravine below, all three of them were killed.” Paul Winslowe said. Johnny laughed. “You expect me to believe that story----that the little girl is a ghost?” He asked Mr. Winslowe.

“Well, son you have the right to believe what you choose to believe but here in the valley every one has been convinced over the years that the McDuff family’s little girl haunts this bridge. “What do you mean over the years Johnny asked. “I mean just that, the little girl., she died with her parents that night and that was the year of 1935. Little did Johnny and I know the little girl was not the only one who haunted the bridge and the valley. In fact we could not see just exactly what was ahead when on that dark night, it was the beginning of our trouble.
