~The Keeper~ A Halloween Story---------Part IV *Blue* |
~The Keeper~ A Halloween Story----------- Part IV
Johnny and I went back to the house that night, each lost in his and her own private thoughts. The next morning after he had gone to work, I decided to do a little research at the local library which was an hour drive away from Donovan’s Mill and Hillcrest. True enough in the old headlines, there was a photograph of Amelia and her parents.
It read On October 24 1935 Andrew and Rebecca McDuff with they’re eight year old daughter Amelia Jean lost they’re lives at Donovan’s Bridge due to icy road conditions. The paper gave very little detail of the accident itself although a statement by the police read, it was believed the accident had occurred sometime between midnight and 1:00am
The newspaper had went on to say that Andrew had been the nephew of the town mayor; George McDuff . The most startling yet crucial piece of information., I would have missed it had I not noticed a grammatical error. Suddenly without warning, the lights in the library went out.
The motor on the old microfiche machine made a sputtering sound reverberating throughout the old library. I turned with a start as I saw the reflection of a shadow cross in between two of the mahogany bookcases, from the streetlight shining through the window in front of me. “Mrs. McPherson?” I called out., My voice sounded deceptively steady and strong as it vibrated in the otherwise soundless room, it was almost as though I were somewhere on center stage.
For the first time, I noticed the musty smell throughout the walls and corridors of the library, briefly I wondered why I hadn’t noticed it before. I called once again to the librarian yet there wasn’t a reply. I heard a rustling noise sounding like paper . Knowing full well I needed to get out of there somehow.
My eyes quickly scanned the room for an exit sign. There didn’t seem to be one until I saw the white door way in the back. That must be it I thought to myself as I felt my throat go dry, I swallowed trying to regain some semblance of composure.
I was going to have to make a dash for that door. My legs felt shaky underneath me, I had been sitting there at the desk several hours engrossed in the newspapers, I wasn’t sure whether my legs could carry me two steps much less the length of the room but it was now or never and I wasn’t going to just sit there.
I knew that it had grown late but being so engrossed in finding any clues to the identity of the little girl, I had not noticed the time, though the librarian surely would have never shut the electrical power down without any warning. Something definitely was not as it should be---- I was thinking to myself when I ran into something. Wildly; I shoved with all my weight at whatever had me blocked….
Whatever I had ran in to had, sent cold shivers down my back, I heard it fall with a resounding thud, echoing throughout the library. As I made it out the wooden door, I looked back catching a brief glimpse of the grizzled face of a man. Rushing to my car as quickly as my legs could carry me, I put the car in gear, with the tires screeching on blacktop, out of the parking lot I turned my car around and drove in the direction of Hillcrest.
Whoever the man was, he didn’t want me searching for information. Later, I went back to the library staying only a brief thirty minutes. Long enough to learn, the paper had been removed that had, had the information regarding Rebecca McDuff.
The night, someone tried to scare me off, apparently they believed I had not seen the information before the electrical power supply had been shut down. Someone didn’t want me to know that Rebecca McDuff was not only a Donovan, but the older sister of Tate Donovan; the keeper, it was the only logical explanation------unless---no, it couldn't be quickly I dismissed the very idea.
At least perhaps, some of the puzzle was beginning to fit together now. More astounding information uncovered was the fact that Rachel O’Malley; the same Rachel whom had become the obsession of Silas Alden Monroe and Robert Montgomery had been Rebecca Mc Duff‘s Great grandmother‘s sister.. I walked quietly from the library but now with curious glances following me all the way to the door in the lobby.

Oh! Way creepy....I am LOVING where this is going! I really loved the part where you said "My voice sounded deceptively steady and strong as it vibrated in the otherwise soundless room, it was almost as though I were somewhere on center stage." I love the detail you put into that sentence, it really gives me a sense of exactly how she sounded and felt! great job! |
