~ The Keeper~
A Halloween Story---------Part V
It was rainy that late afternoon; my mind pre-occupied with thoughts of the little girl Amelia, as I traveled the country road through Donovan’s Mill and Hillcrest. Thinking how sad it must have been for her parents families to lose not only they’re children, Rebecca McDuff had been Tate Donovan’s older sister, Andrew must have been someone’s brother or maybe an uncle, perhaps she had been an aunt.
How tragic; devastating for both families to lose they’re children but also lose a granddaughter, too. The stark reality of the absence of the sound of a child’s laughter throughout the house, would bring deep grief such sorrow.
It was raining harder now, I turned the switch for the windshield wipers to come on when the volume on the car’s radio grew increasingly louder. As I reached in front of me to turn the volume back down, I wanted to simply drown out the thoughts racing through my head, yet I couldn’t get the little
girl out of my mind neither the look in her eyes the night she came to the house, tears streaming down her face. Thinking of the heartbreaking expression that was on her face, that night, the haunting look in her frightened blue eyes. I didn’t see the deer until it was too late as it ran out in front of the car.
I swerved to avoid hitting it when the very person which preoccupied my thoughts every waking minute since first seeing her, had seemed to appear from out of nowhere. I slammed my foot down on the brakes, attempting to avoid both she and the animal. Her small hand reached out connecting with the car, she touched the hood of my 55’ Chevy as her eyes met mine in the car’s window.
My breath caught in my throat. I stopped the car getting out to inspect the damage that hitting the deer had done, walking to the front of the car, there was a small scrape above the right headlight. Nothing more, it seemed to be alright, that had been a close call.
When I turned around in search of the little girl, I caught a glimpse of her pink and blue paisley dress as she walked down over the hill, I followed her but by the time I reached the crest of the hill, she had gone, disappeared. It didn’t surprise me, when somewhere at the back of my mind, I tried searching for answers to the many questions that I had regarding the entire experience, hoping for some type of resolution. I couldn’t help but wonder the why of it all., why Johnny and me---- why us?
Being somewhat of a skeptic, possessing more then a hint of cynicism., before this happened if someone would have asked me whether or not I believed in the supernatural, I would have more then laughed it off, I would have said and without apology; they needed to see a therapist.
Without any conclusion, I surmised that there were some things in which didn’t seem to have an explanation, and others no matter how hard you tried to understand, there just wasn’t an answer.
I started to walk away back up the hill, when I caught a glimpse of the little girl once again, it seemed that she was beckoning me to follow her. She looked back at me, waving then turned to walk in the opposite direction. Throwing reason to the four winds; I decided to follow her.
